The Course

This course is designed for intermediate students of Latin who already have the basics of grammar and are looking to engage more with reading and translation. Students will gain confidence and skill in Latin as we read through the history of Rome, from its founding, through the period of the kings and the republic, to Caesar and Cicero and the Empire, using an adapted version of Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita. The reader provides grammatical and vocabulary assistance on the same page as the text to aid the student in translation. In this course we will begin slowly, covering only about 30 lines of translation per week, but by the end of the year we will be able to cover twice as much. Translation work is done both independently and in the online class meeting via Zoom. Certain more advanced matters of grammar (e.g. semi-deponent verbs, relative clauses, the sequence of tenses, and more) are covered in dedicated videos which students can watch on their own, pause, rewind, and rewatch as needed. Vocabulary is also emphasized and quizzed throughout the course.

Grade Level: High School

(advanced Middle School students are welcome.)

How it works:

Group Translations

Every week we will meet together online for a 45 minute translation session. There we will review previous translations, begin new ones and discuss any confusing grammar and vocabulary.

Independent Work

We will begin translations together in class. Then students will complete the translation on their own, aided by weekly vocabulary memorization and grammar reviews and exercises.

Video Lessons

Review of more complicated grammar such as conditional sentences, sequence of tenses, various types of clauses, and much more are taught throughout the course via video instruction. Students can pause, rewind, and rewatch videos as needed.

Hi, I'm your instructor, Kyle Brown

With a deep and personal love for the Latin language and Roman history, I've been blessed with the opportunity to teach these classes in a variety of settings. I've taught Latin to all types of students, from middle schoolers to graduate students and everything in between. As a classical homeschooling father, I also know how important it is to provide your children with the best quality education you can. That's why I'm offering these courses. It's my goal to help bridge the gap between parents who want to offer their children the best education they can, but perhaps don't have a strong Latin background themselves. Parents, I'm here to tell you: it is possible. And I'm happy to help provide the solution. With you, the homeschooling parent, in mind I've designed these courses to be the perfect balance of flexible and hands-on. God bless.
