Intermediate Latin Readings: Fabulae Romanae

Welcome! This course is designed for intermediate students of Latin who already have the basics of grammar and are looking to engage more with reading and translation. Students will gain confidence and skill in Latin as we read through the history of Rome, from its founding, through the period of the kings and the republic, to Caesar and Cicero and the Empire, using an adapted version of Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita. The reader provides grammatical and vocabulary assistance on the same page as the text to aid the student in translation. In this course we will begin slowly, covering only about 30 lines of translation per week, but by the end of the year we will be able to cover twice as much. Translation work is done both independently and in the online class meeting via Zoom. Certain more advanced matters of grammar are covered in dedicated videos which students can watch on their own, pause, rewind, and rewatch as needed. Vocabulary is also emphasized and quizzed throughout the course.
